Remoterig Portable Operation

I spend quite a bit of time away from the shack and like alot of us this limits the time I have to operate. Well I now have another option open to me! In the picture at the left is the control head of a Kenwood TS-480 along with one part of the Remoterig control unit. Basically this links me back to the radio and antennas at the house anywhere I have a internet connectivity. You are probably saying you can do this with HRD and Skype or a few similar programs. Yes, you can. In fact I did but ran into some issues with my transmit audio, and then had the computer in the shack start crashing frequently. Also, I didn't have a way for the HF rig (IC756ProII) to stop transmitting if the control link went down. The TS-480 solved that problem and when I came across the Remoterig setup, I knew I was going to have to try it! It really is simple. Hook one RRC unit to the rig and internet at your base, and take the other RRC unit and radio of your choice to the place you will operate your radio from. In my case all I need is the control head for the TS-480, RRC unit and Cradlepoint Travel Router (CTR-35) and I'm on the air. All this is packed in a small Pelican case allowing me to take it anywhere. Yes this isn't totally radio but for those that can't have antennas or travel frequently it does allow a chance to get on the air! And isn't that what this hobby is all about?
